Watch now | In this Weekly Wrap Up, Eddie discusses the current political climate in the U.S., focusing on the implications of Donald Trump's rhetoric regarding Gaza and the broader context of U.S. foreign policy. He critiques both Trump and the Biden administration for their roles in the ongoing crisis, emphasizing the historical patterns of American imperialism. Eddie also addresses the influence of oligarchs like Elon Musk on democracy, the significance of racial politics, and the importance of Black History Month as a moment to reflect on the struggles for civil rights and the ongoing fight for a more inclusive democracy.
Dr. Glaude, as I sit and reflect, dissect, and try to disconnect from the voices and noise of the political climate, I reflect on my ancestors. How did they endure, what was their coping mechanism that has filtered through the generations to get to me? I am hopeful, faithful, and prayerful that those lessons will one day, kick in full force, and the challenges and horrors of today; that unfortunately, our children will have to face will be a little bit less. Throughout history, societies have faced complex political challenges, navigating periods of uncertainty, conflict, and transformation. By studying the past, we can gain valuable insights into the struggles and strategies that shaped political landscapes, helping us address the pressing issues of today. Whether dealing with divisions, governance crises, or shifting power dynamics, history offers a guide for understanding patterns, learning from past mistakes, and forging new solutions. Connecting historical perspectives with modern political realities allows us to approach contemporary challenges with a deeper awareness and a more informed strategy for progress. Our ancestors are always watching and I know “I am the hopes and dreams of my ancestors,” who left a great legacy and hopefully we all can honor them with grace. Thank you for this Friday's commentary.
Looking back to 1966-1968 , I witnessed the Glenville and Hough riots in Cleveland. The Glenville being a bloodbath between the Cleveland Police and Black Nationalists on July 23.1968. I was a junior at Kent State University.
Fast Forward, I’m 77 and realize that most of the events were sparked by racial tensions, police brutality and poor living conditions.
We must remove the dark clouds of depression and oppression from people’s lives. I pray for change so that history won’t continue to repeat itself!
2) agree with all you say here...particularly about dearborn[just left the bulwark plus due to most of the journalists there all making a point of bad mouthing the dearborn community
3) agree about the backlash to the black and other communittees the new revelations about elons intern being supportive of eygenics& hatred of indians was clear view of that
4) worried about america as opposed to the law,the law cannot help america now,as trump rattles the legal cage, as cases move against him, he will either deny the marshalls[doj]to uphold the courts findings against him nulifying them or the supreme court will find against him and he will defy them or they will rule with him....there is no salvation of the courts, nor in the democratic party to be found here...if trump wishes to "rule" america, the only salvation here is to be found in the people protesting , which means bodies on the streets..and trump being trump he is sure to send the army...all forces seem to moving towards such a confrontation which could split america into peices? [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TjqSeb9GyeI&t=2733s] George conway breaks it down, and its rare to see him so dispondent :(
5) the democrat party does not have a inspiring leader of the moment to lead the american people in this time, nor does it seem to grapple with the time....just the other day , pelosi said that the democrat party will be ready in 6-7 months to adapt and change to meet the moment..i fear america does not have 6-7 months? :(
6)There are some people that are standing up and making "good trouble" as was said....they are making waves...but we need a movement to make a tsunami..for only that will move this government into timidity?
7)The army thou, there is the key, for a state, the two factors that keep it within democracy are the police and the army..i dont trust the police, having its own political and other corruptions within its body.it would be easily swayed is my opinion here...so its down to the army...if american politicians on the democratic side, dont get the assurances that the army is not gonna get involved, i fear for blood on the streets..because all the signals are moving in the direction at the moment, sadly for the future of america.
8)"we are gonna have do this shit all over again"...i think this should be the primary line of your address in speeches...it just speaks volumes to the times..and trump is pushing this narrative..so hard..so hard , and as you say without restraint
9)Some of the left wing media is at war within itself at the moment....i hoped that in this desperate time, that we would all come together but as ever events seem to favour trump...but perhaps there is equally opportunity?[trying to finish my thoughts on a hopeful note] i still remember that famous image of Ernest Bevin with a english soldier going off into another worldwar[ww2] saying to him[bevin] "Dont let them forget about us when we get back unlike last time"...[the soldier refers to the men and women of britian knuckled down for the first war ,and yet when the war finished were just exploited as the rich reaped the gains again of the peace]..its why when ww2 was over and communism or change threatened britain ,the government gave the people more rights and the national heath service in return for service[and to keep them from communism]...the hope is here,is that if the american people fight and put their bodies on the line to keep democracy..that that very democracy gives them the rights and respect back in return? like bevan upheld that promise to the soldiers of england in WW2...its my hope and dream for those in america if the worse comes to past and america fights for its future and wins it back that they demand or are given something back to make america better for its people for their service?
Thank you. I cry every morning when I hear all the destruction that has happened. I was told by some friends and coworkers that my concerns about Trump were an overreaction. "He just says that stuff. He doesn't actually intend to do it." Yet, here we are. Living with white supremacists that are free to act and speak as they wish.
You are a much better person than me. I contemplate running away to another country so I don't have to hear the hatred. I welcome your sage words each week. I will work to be that stronger person and fight instead of flee.
After everything that has happened this past week I've tried not to watch nor read any news today. It's just been crazy, unthinkable, and overwhelming. Feeling grateful for your message. It's a bright light of hope.

Dr. Eddie.
Thank you for this week’s wrap up and insights.
I woke up this morning with America on my mind.
Looking back to 1966-1968 , I witnessed the Glenville and Hough riots in Cleveland. The Glenville being a bloodbath between the Cleveland Police and Black Nationalists on July 23.1968. I was a junior at Kent State University.
