The other day I was in the Charleston airport, and one of the TSA supervisors, who I talk with every time I travel there, said that he is trying to keep his head up.
Did I miss something in the rage over “caving” where people without food support and/or paychecks are yelling for us to continue the shutdown? Is not 40-some days enough?
God knows, we need healthcare and we need to stay in the fight for it. But did we kinda lose our vision and forget who we are stepping on in our pursuit of these important goals?
The longest shutdown brought many issues into the public consciousness. But Republicans were never going to relent on their cruelty. They’d be happy for us to sacrifice the most vulnerable in our fight over other crucial issues such as healthcare.
Did we really think through the full reality of our opponent’s hideous character?
Let’s not tar ourselves with their ugliness and stench. Let us know when it’s time to help others live while we go on to fight another day. This isn’t caving, it’s caring.
There is no decency to this administration, and cruelty is the point. The overt criminality, the blatant violence, and purchased influence by the billionaires, is packaged for the base to revel in the demonization of the left.
to behonest after schumer caved , not even sure the dems have it in them anymore..as they clamoured to protect the centralist dems that worry more for their donors than the people they profess to represent, God knows, we know the republicans dont care about the american people, but i am losing faith that the dems care too.....its just at this point , trump is moving to confirm his kingship , and his vassals are the billionaires who only care about enriching themselfs at the expense of the people and the country..the rest of us are just serfs, who live and die[mostly die] at their whim :(
All to often I watch in horror as what will become of this nation we have fought for. Black men and women have fought to be seen as equals as they starve American children, women, the disabled, veterans, federal workers, medicaid, Medicare recipients the working man and the poor as though it is a cruel joke. Dr.King was right, this country is sick.
Thank you, Eddie, for your valuable insight into this horrific period we are living in. How can people be expected to work and not get paid? What kind of society denies children and the the elderly food? How much hatred can someone have in their heart to laugh and mock the poor, the disabled, the immigrant, or to use a theoretical term, “the other”? It’s sickening and infuriating. But I also know that there are more of us who love than hate. I keep telling myself that each morning when I wake up and read the news. I keep holding MLK jr’s quote in my heart: “I have decided to stick with love. Hate is too great a burden to bear”. Take care, Eddie and thank you again. 🙏🏼
Well said. Let’s not lose sight of the people who are quietly volunteering to help their neighbors. There are lots of us: Those who patrol immigrant neighborhoods early in the morning to make sure ICE is not staking out the area. Those who work with volunteer groups at food pantries or help newer immigrants find housing, see doctors etc. I’ve been doing volunteer ESL teaching with Afghan women for several years. It’s the one~to~one connections that help me to find humanity in our very dysfunctional, polarized society.
thanks as always for your thoughts and analysis/Dr. Glaude---me: my thinking/my sense is 'no surprises'---akin to a historical continutity. likewise/i'm hoping your conversation w/Dr. Kimberle Crenshaw this evening will be posted on-line sometime in the near future/for those of us whom are unable to attend in person.
Trump and his administration are heartless and cruel. The vast majority of people are much closer to being in a food pantry line than being a billionaire. And billionaires are the only ones benefiting from America’s current state. This is disgusting!
"They lie like they breathe." So true and so mind boggling that a large swath of citizens believe the lies. Thank you for expressing the way so many of us feel.

I totally agree, Dr. Glaude. Great editorial!

Good afternoon Dr. Eddie,
Trump and his administration are heartless and cruel. The vast majority of people are much closer to being in a food pantry line than being a billionaire. And billionaires are the only ones benefiting from America’s current state. This is disgusting!
