Oh, Eddie! This touches me deeply. I have never forgotten my first year of teaching in 1974 at Ed Mayo Jr. High when as an enthusiastic, and very young, new teacher I asked my precious students questions beginning with "What do you think...?" I got blank stares. Crickets. I tried again and again, "Come on...What do you THINK?" I called on someone and got everyone's answer: "I don't know." Seems they didn't know the "right" answer...what I wanted them to say.
Such a lesson for ME! Teaching them to think, question, have opinions was my greatest task!

Thank you, Professor Glaude. I wish for my granddaughter, a sophomore in high school, a college experience as you plan to deliver to your students despite the pressures on you and others. I have long felt that the dumbing of America and Americans (well, teaching kids that it's dangerous and "unseemly" to think) has been a project of the folks now in charge of the country and that our current administration got where they got by making sure they were addressing a populace taught not to ask too many questions. It breaks my heart and makes me anxious for my four, bright, inquisitive, diverse grandchildren. I am buoyed by your declaration of your intentions for the new academic year.
