An excellent essay with many powerfully articulated points. With all respect to Professor Blight, it seems he has a reductive view of identity, as if it's some distraction from what is "real." We are literally heading towards a second civil war because of struggles over identity.
This is absolutely brillaint work. As someone who studied public history in grad school, I can tell you how much our profession needs voices like Blights right now. His point about how the present continually impinges on our work really resonated with me, because its exactly what we're facing when we try to teach students to think critcally about our nations past.
