“The children are always ours, every single one of them, all over the globe; and I am beginning to suspect that whoever is incapable of recognizing this may be incapable of morality.”
I was dismayed when they immediately said they were going to charge him as an adult. What have we come to. He is a child, a disturbed child, but nevertheless a child. Not saying that he shouldn't receive punishment, but this to me is cruel and inhumane.
Why have we let men decide they need an AR to hunt a deer to be used for dinner. Are men so afraid of being seen as weak they need guns of war to protect them. Do we need to throw children in with hardened criminals, are men so weak. Are men so foolish to believe that the gun you own shows how tough you are. It sickens me.
I ran across this substack for the first time today and really appreciated Begin Again in particular.
You are entirely correct. We seem to be bleeding out our soul one death and indignity at a time.
I used to somewhat blithely assume the arc of the universe was bending towards justice. Now I guess I appreciate the constancy of effort and will from so many are required to see it so.
I often find myself pretty far to the right of some of your political positions, but I always really appreciate your moral clarity and how your values are the starting and ending place of pretty much everything you say. Thank you for your wisdom.
I am a huge fan! I have one observation to share (that I'd be shocked at, if it were at all innovate or novel to you) -- this issue I wish you would talk about on this subject is the "culture that the gun lobby" has incrusted in our American life and that now an anemic pace across the "1st world". It is shocking how low we value American lives, even our children lives, and lives of others across the world, consider: Gaza, the Ukraine, all countries across African to name a few place we ignore. The culture that breeds authentic killing machines in our video games, movies etc. It is how we entertain and reward ourselves, and how we Americans measure our freedom. And how easily we accept it now. Most Americans have lost people to war or to street violence. And --- NO, it doesn't have to be this way. We can do better and more. I don't know another way to say this, but we need to crush hate, violence and intolerance (as hypocritical as that sounds).
I love your soaring phrases that direct our thinking. I only wish for more, in ways that I can consume it all. Wishing you a peaceful heart on this day.
I certainly agree that we aren’t OK! Something is morally wrong when people can’t even greet. each other with a “Good Morning!” Showing kindness is FREE!
I find empathetic communication as developed by Dr. Marshall Rosenberg so helpful in trying to sort out what is going on with us. Beliefs drive feelings and needs. There is a party who is pushing the belief that others are to be feared. This is a cornerstone for all the feelings, needs and actions that come from this. Why are they pushing this? Money? The NRA? Power? This belief divides us and makes us focus on each rather than the real culprits.
