100%. God love them, but I listen to Steve Schmidt, Nicole Wallace, Liz Cheney, Reagan-worshipper Joe Scarborough, and “Never Trumpers” and I wonder, do they really think they didn’t lay the groundwork for this debacle. I know you work with several of these folks Professor, and I’m glad you do, but I wish they were more honest about how we got here.

I ticked off Schmidt when I said Reagan was a crappy president during one of his live podcasts. So, he’s changed, but not that much.

Yes, Reagan the Union-buster; Reagan who made the first political bargain with the evangelical right wing by linking arms with Jerry Falwell, a rabid white supremacist and segregationist; Reagan, the first of several late 20th century GOP presidents to explode the national debt by feeding the relentless greed of defense contractors while simultaneously blaming “welfare queens” for draining the national treasury; Reagan, who feigned innocence for a White House-hatched plot to subvert not one, but two laws passed by Congress, one banning military intervention in the Contra war and the other prohibiting arms dealing with Iran. Yeah, what a guy! When Schmidt, Scarborough, et al continue to praise him and deny that the current MAGA GOP’s racist and lawless lineage traces right back to him, they are in total denial. A lovely speech after the Challenger disaster and another extolling the virtues of immigration does not an admirable presidency make.

Thanks, Eddie. I deeply appreciate your sharing your musings. Listening to you is probably as close as I’ll get to a graduate school class, given the stage of life I am in. You gave me much to consider. Thank you again. Heal quickly.

This is the world Ronald Reagan started in 1980 and the GOP has over the last 40 years dismantled American middle and working class people, they have created a feudal system once again where we are desperate and work for low wages and food. They own all the resources and tell us that if we work harder better things are ahead.

Lets call that bullshit

Isn't it amazing that none of them want to take or accept any level of responsibility for THIS crap? They've been using dog whistles for decades and folks are now emboldened to further their hate amd play victim while doing it. This is astonishing.

Trump’s never-ending lies and continuing criminal acts demand his impeachment, removal from office, prosecutions, convictions, and imprisonment. Trump’s MAGA base includes criminals working as ICE’s Gestapo, it includes an irretrievably corrupted Supreme Court, it includes criminals serving in the President’s Cabinet, hundreds of corrupt Republican Members of Congress, thousands of corrupt Republican office-holders, and millions of Neo-Nazis who hate People-of-Color.

Led by the lifelong racist Donald Trump, these MAGAts are trying to convert the USA’s Constitutional Republic into a Fascist, Christian-Nationalist, White-Supremacist Kleptocracy to be ruled in perpetuity by the Trump Family Crime Syndicate.

The overwhelming majority of Americans reject Trump, his Sycophants, and the crimes they have committed, and continue to commit. This majority will seize control of Congress in 2026, impeach Trump and remove him from office in 2027, and retake the Whitehouse in 2028.

Every republican who continued to vote for Republicans after January 6, 2021 is a J6 racist. There is no argument that they are not racist.

I do really struggle with some of the NeverTrump /former Republicans, the intelligent, educated, thoughtful ones like David Brooks & Bill Krystal, who do seem to have evolved on many issues. Their self-described “small-c” conservative perspectives on some things are often well worth listening to, and yet…as a strongly progressive Democrat ~ YES, it was their Reaganism that put us on the path we're on now. They just can't seem to see - or accept - the connection.

There are one or two who are apologizing, surprisingly enough. Stuart Stevens did the other day. A small step, but something.

D Brooks is a chameleon and panderer. Political “piety" for the sake of an income stream. Expect him to move from NYT to WaPo or WSJ any day now.

Can't tell you how much I appreciate this post and this analysis. It's so important to point out that Trumpism is the outgrowth of Reaganism, that the supporters of Reagan, George H W Bush and George Bush brought us Trump and now they appear to have forgotten "welfare queens" and "trickle down economics" and the racism of Willie Horton. And you're absolutely right---corporations, media and politicians lied after George Floyd. And the powers-that-be in academia have never really been brave. Or particularly "woke." Thank you for continuing the fight--and thank you for continuing to speak about Gaza.

Prof. Glaude I am very pleased to have your commentary recommended to me based on my level of engagement with similar creators on the platform. Thank you for possessing the political consciousness to draw a clear line from the "Reagan Revolution" to the benighted, anti-democratic Trump-Republican administration we are all grappling with now.

Even those who are opposed to the President and his policies of over-reach will puff up their chests in posting a note about how their Dad or Mom, life-long Republicans, who voted for Reagan twice would be disgusted with Trump's reactionary, nativist politics. Is there really that much sunlight between the ideologies of the two movements?

One is loutish while the other was more high-toned but both have succeeded in profoundly disrupting the business of government and setting the American people against one another. Disappointingly, even establishment Democrats like President Obama and the Clinton's regard Reagan as a mantle of conservative leadership.

Gaza is our moral moment. The systematic ravaging of its people is too much to bear.
